The Warped Woodturner (TWW) is a local artist traveling his artist's journey in a suburb of Springbrook, WI (pop. 536). TWW's creative calling is to use a wood lathe to make useless objects from locally-sequestered organic carbon for tourists to bring back to the city to give to people they had to buy something for but do not like that much. His target market is the senior citizens since their vision is not as good as it used to be so cannot see the defects as well. His marketing jingle is: “Bowls as simple as their creator”.

Quote for the day

"In Virginia, the weather also has changed dramatically. Recently arrived residents in the northern suburbs, accustomed to today's anemic winters, might find it astonishing to learn that there were once ski runs on Ballantrae Hill in McLean, with a rope tow and local ski club. Snow is so scarce today that most Virginia children probably don't own a sled."

Gray February - Day 7

The thought for today is a little blasphemy to lighten your gray day. TWW includes it here to show you what the infidels are proclaiming in their depravity. They have even taken to quoting George Orwell as if he would support their cause. Orwell said "In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act". And worse yet they are trying to exploit the gullible by selling t-shirts with this quote (see: depraved link)

The blasphemous quote is: "Scientists erect hypotheses to test based upon the fundamental science assumption of parsimony, or simplicity, sometimes grandly referred to as Occam’s Razor. That is to say, in seeking to explain matters of observation or experiment, a primary underlying principle is that the simplest explanation be sought; extraneous or complicating factors of interpretation, such as “extraterrestrials did it”, are only invoked when substantive evidence for such a complication.

Concerning the climate change that we observe around us today – which, importantly, is occurring at similar rates and magnitudes to that known to have occurred throughout the historical and geological past – the simplest (and therefore null) hypothesis, is that “the climate change observed today is natural unless and until evidence accrues otherwise”.

In regard to which, first, no such evidence has emerged. And, second, like any null hypothesis, that about modern climate change is there to be tested, as it has been. There are literally tens of thousands of peer-reviewed papers in major scientific journals that contain observations, data, experiments and theoretical reasoning that are consistent with the null hypothesis, which has therefore yet to be falsified (but, of course, one day might be)".

Snowshoe life enrichment opportunity

Gray February Life Enrichment Activity

When office workers get totally stymied they clean their desks. When woodturners get stymied due to atmospheric conditions in winter, they reorganize their stock of unused wood. Below are some rough bowls awaiting refinement.

Here are some partially-completed bowls awaiting bottoms and buffing.

This is what TWW has for inventory in birch (left) and maple (right) from the 2005 storm.

This is the cherry and popple (far left bottom shelf) inventory.

This is the oak inventory of unfinished bowls.

By this time you may be wondering if TWW has anything better to do in gray February. Well.......actually he does. He just heard a snapping finger upstairs......."yes dear?".

Gray February - Day 6

Thought for the day

"KARACHI, Pakistan – Two bombs exploded in Pakistan's largest city Friday, one outside a hospital treating victims from the earlier attack on Shiite Muslim worshippers. At least 22 people were killed and more than 50 wounded."

Thought for the day : When the US bombed hospitals during the war in Vietnam the world (meaning the liberal elite) was outraged. When Islamic terrorists create a 'man-caused disaster' (official government term) what does the elite say? (hint: it starts with a 'B')

Gray February - Day 5

The analysts were correct again.

Gray February - Day 4

It is dark out yet today but to keep our government grant money coming in we are going to say it is still gray outside and anthropogenic global warming is the cause.

Gray February - Day 3

It is actually sunny today but TWW does not want reality to get in the way of SCIENCE since cloudy days are caused by anthropogenic global warming.

Gray February - Day 2

The weather has again met the analyst's expectations. Maybe the experts are getting smarter. Projecting from this series of correct predictions means we should be frying by summer like the experts say is coming.

Gray February - Day 1

The first day of February arrived clouded over meeting or exceeding analysts expectations. The experts got it right for a change.

Good news for drought-stricken NW WI

The area where Garbin Moraine sits is about two feet short of rain over the last few years. To help save us from the perils of anthropegenic global warming our local environmentalists are touting biomass fuels.

The blog sourced below says "We recently heard that, according to one group of researchers at Environmental Science & Technology magazine, corn ethanol has a water cost of 50 gallons per mile." and goes on to say getting ethanol from other crops is not so good either.

TWW wonders if these people will ever get it.

TWW Rants Again

After getting numerous calls from the Outreach Association and failing to block them with *60 on our country phone, TWW answered and told them 'Good Bye' but they then called to ask for Mrs TWW. She anwsered and learned it was Habitat for Humanity that was behind the nuisance calls. Building houses for the 'deserving poor' sounds like a worthwhile cause but supporting telemarketing is not. So what to do? Interestingly enough the local branches of Habitat will gladly accept donations so that is our next step. That way the money goes to what it is intended for. See this link: http://www.sos.wa.gov/CHARITIES/search_detail_cfr.aspx?cfr_id=20231 It says "According to the financial information shown at left, 60% of the contributions raised by this organization were returned to or retained by the charity client(s)."

Even TWW is good enough at arithmetic to know that means nearly half of what you donate to a charity when these people calls goes to the telemarketing company. Definitely time to donate locally.

Outing of a deviant smoke detector

After hiding in the ceiling rather than the closet for several years (See link to discovery of deviant detector) this smoke detector has finally been outed so anyone can see it. It also has been added to the Detector Predator Registry.

This marks the last day of gloomy January where there is nothing to do up in the woods. Tomorrow is the beginning of gray February.

Message for liberals and environmentalists

OSB (and we are not talking about pseudo-plywood here) wants you on his side. He wants you to to join his cause against the US. This should be an easy sell.

"CAIRO (AP) - Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called in a new audiotape for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming."

Soon we will see TV news showing Al Gore meeting with OSB in rural Pakistan. Gore will be heard congratulating OSB on his small carbon footprint and saying how Americans should use OSB (not the plywood) as a role model.

Bulging Bowl Bottom Breakthrough

As a life enrichment experience TWW (the human not the bogus company) decided to do some bowls with the center of the tree in the center of the bowl as Nature intended. He made the bowl below and Mrs. TWW (the woman not the bogus company) loved it.

About two weeks later after proudly displaying the bowl in the great room of Garbin Moraine Manor Mrs TWW (the woman not the bogus company) tearfully complained to TWW (the human not the bogus company) her bowl was wobbling even though the ground was not shaking.

TWW (the human not the company) picked up the bowl and found the bottom was bulging in the center. The wood had warped in an unwanted direction. TWW (the human not the bogus company) took the bowl out to the TWW (the bogus company) workshop and used a belt sander to sand the bottom flat again. The result was a flat-bottomed nonwobbling bowl with a small drain hole in the middle.
