The Warped Woodturner (TWW) is a local artist traveling his artist's journey in a suburb of Springbrook, WI (pop. 536). TWW's creative calling is to use a wood lathe to make useless objects from locally-sequestered organic carbon for tourists to bring back to the city to give to people they had to buy something for but do not like that much. His target market is the senior citizens since their vision is not as good as it used to be so cannot see the defects as well. His marketing jingle is: “Bowls as simple as their creator”.

The Production Process

There are several steps to creating a sequestered carbon product:

  • a seed must land in conditions needed for it to sprout and begin the carbon sequestration process
  • the carbon sequestration process must be allowed to proceed until enough carbon has been sequestered to permit TWW to make a product
  • TWW or someone else needs to cut down the tree containing the sequestered carbon
  • TWW then cuts the resulting sequestered carbon into lengths he can handle and stores the cylindrical sequestered carbon until he can work with it
  • TWW cuts the cylindrical sequestered carbon into pieces a little longer than the diameter of the log
  • TWW cuts those cylindrical sequestered carbon pieces into half cylinders (a cut perpendicular to the diameter of the sequestered carbon cylinder)
  • TWW rounds those pieces so they spin without vibrating the lathe too badly
  • TWW makes a rough sequestered carbon bowl with walls about 10% of the diameter of the original sequestered carbon cylinder
  • TWW wraps the rough sequestered carbon bowls in newspaper to slow drying to avoid cracking and allows them to sit for three or more months
  • TWW takes the rough sequestered carbon bowl and removed wood to create the finished sequestered carbon bowl
  • TWW applies walnut oil (in most cases) to the surfaces of the sequestered carbon bowl
  • The final product will sequester carbon as long as the owner does burn it in their wood stove
