The Warped Woodturner (TWW) is a local artist traveling his artist's journey in a suburb of Springbrook, WI (pop. 536). TWW's creative calling is to use a wood lathe to make useless objects from locally-sequestered organic carbon for tourists to bring back to the city to give to people they had to buy something for but do not like that much. His target market is the senior citizens since their vision is not as good as it used to be so cannot see the defects as well. His marketing jingle is: “Bowls as simple as their creator”.

Tis the season for passing gas

Green gassy clouds - How much farting is too much?

"How much farting is normal?

Most people pass gas 10 to 20 times a day.
If you’re farting a lot (and you don’t have to count), it’s probably because of something you ate or a change in the bacteria in your gut."

Is TWW trying to create more terrorists?

Shooter 'wasn't very popular' in high school, friend recalls

There TWW has done his part.  The guy is now on the Internet again so the young people who do not quite fit in to society have another picture of the current folk heroes thanks to the TV networks showing their pictures so many times. The future terrorists or mass shooters must be dreaming about how famous they can become.

As an aside perhaps the real question for the day should be if the men get all the virgins when they go to heaven as martyrs what do the female terrorists get?  Is the answer sensitive, caring men?

excellent anlysis of why Trump gets all the free air time

"This latest Donald Trump episode is a glittering, glaring example of how he is playing the media like a Stradivarius. And I tell you, folks, for all of you people who have complained and whined and moaned about the media over the years, and how unfair they are to Republicans and how unfair that makes the whole process and, "What are we gonna do?" You need to be studying Donald Trump. I don't care whether you think what he says is outrageous or wrong or whatever. That's the wrong way to look at this right now.
This latest quote/unquote "outrage" from Trump is a perfect example of how he plays the media, how he knows exactly what to do and how to do it to own their attention and airtime. He says things that he knows will drive them crazy. He says things over and over that he knows will drive them insane, and then when they go insane, he doubles down on it and drives them even crazier. He also knows that his audience is in on what he is doing."

some CS (common sense) amidst all the BS?

The article talked about below was written by a journalist working for a public interest journalistic group of people (that means they are left leaning??) Bad things are happening out there and worse yet is the problem of trying to prevent more of them from happening. Perhaps the best people can come up with is solutions that may not make sense.

Article highlights:

OVER the past two decades, the majority of Americans in a country deeply divided over gun control have coalesced behind a single proposition: The sale of assault weapons should be banned. ..."That idea was one of the pillars of the Obama administration’s plan to curb gun violence, and it remains popular with the public. In a poll last December, 59 percent of likely voters said they favor a ban...But in the 10 years since the previous ban lapsed, even gun control advocates acknowledge a larger truth: The law that barred the sale of assault weapons from 1994 to 2004 made little difference."...."Annually, 5,000 to 6,000 black men are murdered with guns. Black men amount to only 6 percent of the population. Yet of the 30 Americans on average shot to death each day, half are black males."

read the article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/14/sunday-review/the-assault-weapon-myth.html?_r=0

TWW's soapbox:

  • Is reality as seen through the lens of the media reality?
  • Airplane crashes scare people because of the large number of deaths but car crashes are run of the mill unless you know someone involved.
  • 'Mass shootings' scare people but murders especially in the ghetto are also run of the mill unless you know the victims
  • When a relatively small number of white people die it is a much bigger deal than when a much bigger number of black people die (do the Black Lives Matter people ever talk about this?)
  • Laws need definitions. When the government defines something and makes it illegal people work to get around the law legally. During the pretend ban on assault weapons (nobody confiscated the existing guns) during the Clinton years the gun makers got around the law and introduced more weapons.
  • Gun free zones only allow criminals the ability to protect themselves in the zones

here we go again

First there is a tragedy connected with GUNS.  Next, somebody proposes a solution they are pushing and claim it is a great idea and third we learn it would not have prevented the tragedy.

Here is the solution:

"President Obama: "Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun. What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terrorist suspect to buy a semi-automatic weapon? This is a matter of national security." "
Here is the reality:

"CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton reports a law enforcement source says the target of the raid was Enrique Marquez, who is believed to have been the individual who three years ago bought the AR15 rifles in California used in the San Bernardino attack.
Marquez checked himself into a mental health facility after the attack."
Note: was this guy on the no fly list? No-Fly List

On another note:
"The U.S. government offers no adequate method for people to challenge their placement on its no-fly list, a federal judge ruled Tuesday in a case involving 13 Muslims who believe they're on the list.
U.S. District Court Judge Anna Brown found people lack a meaningful way to challenge their placement on the list, which bars them from flying to or within the United States. She also said the 13 people who sued the government have been unconstitutionally deprived of their right to fly."
Comment: If TWW remembers correctly this bit about not being able to get off the list is one of the reasons the NRA is against the idea Obama is proposing (the other reason they can use it to get contributions). In any other setting the proposal would be called racist since has it in for people who are Islamic.
Are you on the no fly list? See: http://www.no-fly-list.com/
Note: Uncle Anders is not on the list. TWW checked.

what he should have said -- words matter

What he meant:  "Here is an analogy for you on the Syrian refugee issue.  There is no reason to hate all dogs since only a very small number of them have rabies.  But"

"If there's a rabid dog running around in your neighborhood, you're probably not going to assume something good about that dog," Carson said during a campaign stop in Alabama. "And you're probably going to put your children out of the way. "

"but" ( a word TWW added) "That doesn't mean that you hate all dogs."

source: http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/19/politics/ben-carson-rabid-dogs-refugees/index.html

TWW's comment: So why weren't the enlightened liberals who know about nuances and all that stuff smart enough to understand a good analogy rather than being horrified?

President Obama's minister was right ?

"We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost," he told his congregation."

source: http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/DemocraticDebate/story?id=4443788&page=1

Are these more politically correct chickens coming home to roost too?

"A man who has been working in the area said he noticed a half-dozen Middle Eastern men in the area in recent weeks, but decided not to report anything since he did not wish to racially profile those people.

“We sat around lunch thinking, ‘What were they doing around the neighborhood?'” he said. “We’d see them leave where they’re raiding the apartment.”.

Double Denier Day (DDD)

TWW turned on liberal National Public Radio today around 5:30AM to learn their version of the truth today since Rush Limbough was not on yet today to reveal the real truth and within two minutes learned it was Double Denier Day. Actually most every day is Double Denier Day lately with so many group shootings for the media and Washington to explain to the masses.

The second story was about the Paris to save the world from Climate Change. You all have heard about the climate deniers who say climate change is not proven and we should wait and see before taking any action that may hurt certain groups like the people who use electricity (that is us).

The first story revealed another type of denial. The reality was right in front of TWW's eyes but he was too blind to see it until today. The first news story was about the man and woman who shot up the party in San Bernadino.  The story cautioned that just because the people who were the killers were of Pakistan and Saudia Arabia descent does not mean they were terrorists and we should wait until all the facts are in and nothing has been proved yet.  This sounds just like what the climate deniers say. People can bend over backwards to keep from having to admit something is reality.  From this it is obvious we are dealing with denial on the liberal side. Let's start calling these people the Jihadism Deniers. Or should we wait for more  evidence that this is really what is going on?

A primer from Wikipedia

"Jihadism (jihadist movement, jihadi movement and variants) is used to refer to contemporary armed jihad in Islamic fundamentalism. The term "jihadism" was coined in the 2000s and mostly used to cover Islamic insurgency and Islamic terrorism since that time, but it has also been extended to cover both Mujahideen guerilla warfare and Islamic terrorism with an international scope since it arose in the 1980s, since the 1990s substantially represented by the al-Qaeda network."

enough is enough (defined as what?) -- soapbox of the day

"WASHINGTON -- After a shooting Friday at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, President Obama once again called for tighter gun control.
The president said, "...We have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them. Period. Enough is enough." "

source: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/new-details-about-colorado-planned-parenthood-shooting-suspect-robert-lewis-dear/

Enough of what? Enough BS? What we really need is an analysis of possible solutions that is objective. But that would be common sense which almost all of the entire gun debate lacks.

Here are two articles attempting to do some of what is missing:

"For now, the bottom line is this: large-capacity magazines do not lead to higher casualty counts in mass shootingsIt is the desire of the perpetrator to shoot a lot of people leads to higher casualty counts. The choice of a large-capacity magazine may reflect that desire, but it does not seem to facilitate its realization. Lacking large-capacity magazines, the shooters could realize their evil intentions with other widely available means."

"In the end, my point concerning violence broadly and gun violence in particular is the need for specificity over generality. Although we need to have some definition of violence to create a horizon for our disciplined study of the phenomenon, I do believe that fundamentally there is no such thing as gun violence in general. There are specific acts of violence involving guns with specific phenomenologies, etiologies, and outcomes."

Both of the quotes are from David Yamane who is a sociologist.

The big gorilla in the room is time. Society can give someone permission to get a gun (said to upset the gun people) but how do people know some time in the future the person will not do  something bad with it. It  could be years.  Be watchful for news stories saying the guy in Colorado Springs bought all of this guns legally. If this is true what does it mean about common sense gun regulations?

mystery solved

The Chinese do not have boots on the ground like Carson first claimed. He meant to say 'sandals' like all the people in Asia must wear.

Source of picture:  https://www.facebook.com/realbencarson/photos/a.143829065783568.1073741825.138691142964027/555567407943063/?type=3&theater

And here is the mainstream media version of the truth: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/white-house-fact-checks-ben-carson-claims-chinese/story?id=35183114

And more 'proof' from somebody TWW has never heard of fro a few year back:

"Special Report
Chinese Radars in Syria
Sean O’Connor

As the Syrian crisis continues, new evidence is suggesting a far greater amount of Chinese military assistance to the Assad regime than previously believed. Imagery analysis reveals the presence of Type 120, JYL-1, and JY-27 (GREAT WALL) radar systems at various EW complexes in Syria. The radars are present in imagery dating as far back as 2009. Given that the current crisis in Syria developed in late 2011, the new identification of Chinese military equipment does not represent overt Chinese support of the Assad regime. While China does not support Western initiatives regarding the crisis, it is imperative to note that the 2009 or earlier delivery timeline predates the situation and is indicative only of an import-export relation between the two states."

One thing Hillary does not have to worry about

It is sex education time for TWW. When he heard about the laws against taking pictures up women's skirts he could never make sense of them. Now the next time he sees someone carrying a plastic box in a store he will pay more attention and be sure his fly is zipped up.

Question: what is the cure for Trumpf?

"In one of the more bizarre speeches that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has delivered this campaign season, Trump went on a rant that lasted more than ten minutes on new frontrunner, retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson. Here in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he accused Carson of being a liar and once again, as he did earlier in the day on CNN, likened Carson to a child molester with a pathological disease.

"There's no cure for that," Trump said."

When does the media start calling Mein Trumpf racist?

white privelege not in Missouri but rather in Yale - can you tell the difference?

"They thought their request for an apology ought to have been sufficient to secure one. Who taught them that it is righteous to pillory faculty for failing to validate their feelings, as if disagreement is tantamount to disrespect? Their mindset is anti-diversity, anti-pluralism, and anti-tolerance, a seeming data-point in favor of April Kelly-Woessner’s provocative argument that “young people today are less politically tolerant than their parents’ generation.” "

This is talking about the student reaction to an e-mail about Halloween costumes but sure sounds similar to the student demands in MO. The only difference is some of the students in Missouri were actually victims but what difference should reality make to the elite college students.

More where does truth lie? (copied from Carson's Facebook page)

Here is an interview my mother did in Parade Magazine on May 11, 1997. Did CNN do any research at all?

TWW says: The real scandal here is how he conned his mother into lying for him in the Parade interview.

TWW acknowledges his white male privilege but refuses to quit

"Concerned Student 1950 has demanded, among other things, that Wolfe "acknowledge his white male privilege," that he be removed immediately, and that the school adopt a mandatory racial-awareness program and hire more black faculty and staff."

So what are the protesters going to do now?  Holding one's breath until one turns blue does not work well for people in minority groups.  Is not turning blue when some people cannot an example of white privilege?

Great news for gun makers -- as heard on CBS

Don't buy all the BS from the second amendment fanatics.  Smart guns are good for the gun industry.

The anti-gun Violence Policy Center said this in a background report:

"Would smart guns entice individuals who otherwise wouldn’t buy a gun to bring a weapon
into their home?

Making smart guns available could increase the chances of selling guns to Americans who
currently do not own them. A March 1997 survey conducted by the National Opinion Research
Center found that, of respondents who were “unlikely to buy a gun in the future,” 35 percent
would “consider buying a handgun that would only fire for the owner of the gun.” Packaged
with a strong sales pitch, the technology could penetrate new markets for a gun industry that is
facing long-term declines in household and personal gun ownership, putting more families at risk
from the well-documented hazards that accompany bringing a gun into a previously gun-free
home."

And always remember more guns means less crime.

Whats next? Global warming deniers will be called commies

"Russia's official view appears to have changed little since 2003, when Putin told an international climate conference that warmer temperatures would mean Russians "spend less on fur coats" while "agricultural specialists say our grain production will increase, and thank God for that".
The president believes that "there is no global warming, that this is a fraud to restrain the industrial development of several countries including Russia," says Stanislav Belkovsky, a political analyst and critic of Putin. "That is why this subject is not topical for the majority of the Russian mass media and society in general." "

more racist rants

"Here’s something you may not know: Dr. Ben Carson is black.
Of course, I’m being a little cute here. The only way you wouldn’t know he’s black is if you were blind and only listened to the news......... Yet conservatives also refuse to adopt those liberal policies just to prove they aren’t bigots. Carson — not to mention Carly Fiorina and Hispanics Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio — demonstrates that there’s no inherent contradiction between being a minority (or a woman) and supporting conservative principles. And that fact is just too terrible for some liberals to contemplate.  "

Beware of bags of popcorn in Florida

"Mr. Reeves was arrested for the fatal shooting of Chad Oulson in January 2014. Police say Mr. Oulson threw his bag of popcorn in Reeves' face after the former captain criticized him for texting. Reeves responded by pulling out his gun and shooting Oulson in the chest, according to law enforcement. A bullet also grazed Oulson's wife, Nicole.
“I think we have a pretty solid stand your ground case,” Richard Escobar, Reeves’ attorney, told the Tampa Bay Times. Escobar plans to utilize a video taken at the scene to prove Reeves acted lawfully under Florida’s self-defense law and ultimately have the criminal charges dismissed. A five-day hearing is scheduled to begin on Jan. 25.
With strong support from the National Rifle Association in 2005, the "gunshine state" became the first to pass a ‘stand your ground’ law that allows citizens to use deadly force if they fear their own harm or death. Under Florida’s "stand your ground" law, “a defendant must be able to show that he had a ‘reasonable belief’ in a threat before using deadly force, not that the threat actually existed,” explains the Tampa Bay Times. If the judge determines the defendant had "reasonable belief" for using deadly force, the shooter is “immune from criminal prosecution and civil action.” "

propaganda for the day

When people talk about murder rates comparing US to the other industrialized country is it a sign of liberal arrogance about the lesser-developed (meaning lesser) countries? Just saying. What follows is right-wing propaganda for your enjoyment.

Time for a letter to the local editor?

This is about the Spooner school board being expanded by a group of people calling themselves Families United for Superior Education (FUSE):

"Editor:

The FUSE social movement came up with brilliant strategy to pack the school board.  Their Facebook announcement about their original petition to expand the school board said "Increasing the number of board members would ease the time-commitment overload for current board members by distributing the extensive responsibilities to more individuals". For some reason they forgot to mention the fact four new members could shift the votes on the board in a direction they favor.

Back in the 1940s President Franklin Roosevelt tried but failed to get a law though Congress allowing him to pack the Supreme Court by expanding the number of justices so he could have a court majority favoring his New Deal agenda. As part of the evolution of the FUSE movement perhaps we need to start thinking of FUSE as the School Board Packers (SB Packers).

While the SB Packers cannot appoint the additional school board members it may not really matter.  When attendees at the annual meeting for the district passed the agenda item to expand the school board it was nearly the same as the SB Packers winning the game. Who would want to run for the school board and get the same grief the current school board members are getting except of course former school district employees with an ax to grind who have retired or left to teach in other districts or their ardent fans.

Oddly enough before writing caustic letters about fictional consolidators and real packers I had planned on writing a letter to the Advocate saying it was time for the school board to start exploring another referendum. The recall nonsense had faded away and the needed extra money has to come from somewhere. The last referendum went down in flames after the Advocate carried some articles saying how much teachers were paid. That all changed with Act 10 and the teachers were forced to sacrifice. With a few exceptions the school board seems to have been struggling to cut costs so perhaps it was time for the taxpayers to also sacrifice to keep the Spooner schools from declining. But the SB Packers have changed the game.

Will something positive come from all of this after all? If you look at the FUSE Facebook page it sounds like FUSE has the best of intentions but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Hopefully we do not eventually learn FUSE really means 'Facilitating the Unpopular Superintendent's Exit' and the packed school board next April resembles a phoenix arising from the ashes of a pre-Act 10 teachers union.

Note: the public meeting to vote on expanding the school board occurs on Monday October 19th when TWW and Mrs. TWW will be at the body shop in Duluth getting something fixed so cannot vote. It is not likely the vote to expand will fail but one never knows.

Let the paranoia get even stronger

"When everybody's out to get you, paranoia is just good thinking."  said Dr. Johnny Fever in the TV show WKRP.

"The questioner mistakenly believes there are no more handguns in Australia. And Hillary seems to think there are no legal issues involved in government efforts to restrict gun rights or institute forced buybacks; no mention of the Second Amendment and I suppose in her mind if she gets four years of picked Supreme Court justices, in effect we won't have a Second Amendment. Some sort of mandatory government buyback of weapons is, she said, "worth considering on the national level if that could be arranged."

Aristotle on Trump

"Trump’s commonsensical outbursts have already affected the other candidates, some of whom appear compelled to alter their droning liturgical styles. By his presence Trump improves the system. My wife approvingly calls him “the Trumpet” for his brazenness. Of course all this bothers media intelligentsia who over-intellectualize mass political drivel. They speak in terms of Trump’s supposedly inevitable destiny to “self destruct” and so forth. Trump is perhaps too abrupt for them. Regarding ethos, Trump seems to appeal to audiences tired of professional purveyors of that which Princeton philosopher Harry Frankfurt has formally defined as bullshit, which is worse than the lie. The liar at least has some knowledge of truth, merely seeking to deny it, but the bullshit artist soars untethered from reality into a world of self-serving fabrication. Trump may or may not be a good man, but in today’s political ecology he remains an alternative to those surfeit with the professional patter of careerist politicians. In the end it may all come down to ethos.  So Aristotle, it appears, also knows the American electorate better than the pollsters and analysts who have been trying to account for the phenomenon of The Donald.     "

Vote ID will not solve this one

"The use of the Electoral College rather than the popular vote to pick the eventual president means the presence of some 11-12 million illegal immigrants and noncitizens living legally in the United States could hinder Republicans' chances of winning the 2016 presidential race, a new report shows.

How? The answer lies in the nature of the country's Electoral College and how it bases selection of the president on the U.S. Census, which in turn credits states for total populations of both legal and illegal residents. The result is that states like Florida and California, which sizeable populations of illegals live in, carry more clout for their number of electoral votes."

here we go again but how often will you hear this on TV??

"Can mass shootings be contagious?

There’s no doubt about it. Suddenly, for example, there have been several shootings in movie theaters, and the number of shootings of four or more persons at a time has increased quite a bit over the past couple years. The media, without a doubt, has a role in facilitating more events. There is research that shows that fewer headlines can equal fewer incidents and vice versa. The repeated nature of the showing of the event serves to spread or accelerate the transmission of the behavior."

So what to do if this is true?

"People act because of the way they were treated by others — i.e., they pick up these behaviors in subconscious ways — and the brain is hardwired to copy other behaviors. Contagion means that something is contagious if it produces more of itself. Flu begets more flu, for example. The same principle is also true for violence, though it’s not true for everything: High blood pressure, for example, doesn’t cause other people to have high blood pressure. With violence, it’s just what we empirically see in nature — the greatest predictor of violence is exposure to a preceding event of violence. We also know there’s an underlying process that causes this to happen: There are neurons on the brain that cause copying, which is the principle way people pick up all kinds of behavior. Violence is a very powerful type of behavior for copying because it’s so electric and emotional that it actually causes even more copying. These are predicable biological processes."

More TRUTH - so once again what does a survey really mean

"Carlton and his colleagues sent surveys to nearly 2,000 biophysical scientists at universities in the Big 10 conference (which primarily includes universities in the Northeast and Midwest). The scientists surveyed included experts in a broad range of disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics and geosciences, and also included some climate scientists."

source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/09/25/yet-another-survey-shows-the-climate-change-debate-is-settled-among-scientists/

Notice how the survey people were nice enough to throw in some of the scientists who actually study climate in their sample. If TWW remembers right one leading denier said most of the other skeptics he knows think the climate has warmed but that humans play a small role in it. In other words they believe in climate change caused by humans but do not think humans are the main cause.

What this survey may have measured was how much being indoctrinated by liberal values in a university setting by either classes or group pressure to conform influences how they think.

The article also says: " In fact, cultural and political values do seem to play a role among scientists. Those who believed that global temperatures are rising were more egalitarian, more communitarian and more liberal than those who did not, the survey revealed."

ps. last month TWW's leased from the power coop solar panels generated 600kw of the electricity Mrs. TWW used. How many of the true believers in climate change caused by humans can claim they are doing as much to save the world?

So TWW has to ask

"Should someone who is against gay marriage, women's right to have abortions, welfare, does not think climate change is real etc. be elected president?"

"Carson was asked whether a president's faith should matter after businessman Donald Trump declined to say anything when a person asking him questions at a town hall said President Obama was a Muslim and not American.
"I guess it depends on what that faith is. If it's inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the constitution, no problem," Carson said. "
So what do people in the Islamic religion think of gay marriage and abortion?

So once again what to believe.

So who to believe ?

Or

"In this sharply divided country, there surely is also strong disagreement about the extent to which government ought to be protecting citizens from self-harm. But I presume that a broad spectrum of the public on both sides of the aisle would agree there is an appropriate government role in protecting citizens from being harmed by one another. So if we leave aside self-inflicted deaths, the average car is 1.8 times as risky as the average gun. That is,  my owning a car is 80 percent more likely to result in the death of another person than my owning a gun. In light of this simple fact, it is puzzling why gun ownership is so vehemently scorned on the left as somehow being a flagrantly irresponsible act."
